Self Care

Self Care. Such an important topic – it should be a big part of our lives but for most it has fallen to the wayside.

As a mom, a wife and business owner (with a couple projects on the go!) I am conscious to put in the effort to take care of number 1 — me! I know so many moms / women out there feel that it should be all about the kids, taking care of their husband or anyone and everyone else in their lives.

Listen. I get it! I myself identify as a caregiver, I enjoy taking care of the people I love, heck my chosen career path is helping others and to top it off… I choose to host dinner parties for friends as often as our schedule permits. These things are all important to me and part of who I am.

I like to think of the airplane mask analogy in regards to self care – you have to put your mask on before you can aid someone else… so for me before I can be that caregiver, the Pilates instructor / nutrition coach or the host, I better make sure I’m at my best and my health (Crohns specifically) is under control.

Here are a few big benefits of self care:

  • Helps reduce stress
  • It gives you a break
  • It can offer alone time

To be sure I’m going to be feeling good I practice daily self care – here are the daily foundations I use to care for myself:

  • Sleep
  • Drink lots of water
  • Nourish my body with healthy foods
  • Exercise

Some simple things you can try to add to your day more regularly:

  • Take a long bath (or shower!)
  • Read a book you enjoy
  • Call a friend / grab a coffee
  • Journal
  • Meditate
  • Enjoy a glass of wine

Some fun options you may enjoy:

  • Get a massage
  • Go to the spa / salon
  • Take a fitness class you enjoy

Self care is very individual and unique to each person – it can be simple daily things or more extravagant spa type activities you do to keep your health and well being (both physical and mental) in check. Whatever it takes just know how important you are – and know that you deserve a little ‘me’ time!

“Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others.”
